COLOR & MATERIALS DESIGN: BUICK AVENIR CONCEPT VEHICLE
Buick Avenir Concept Car (Debuted at 2014 North American International Auto Show) Involvement: Color & Materials Design (Exterior Paint) The Buick Avenir Concept Car was a special project designed between two of General Motors global design studios and slated for unveiling at the Detroit Auto Show. I was tasked with designing the perfect exterior color for the property.
Extensive color trend research lead me to a few paint options that were appropriate for a large Buick sedan like Avenir, The final color direction was a paint we had affectionately named “Megalodon” due to its similarity of a paint color I previously created for Cadillac called “Hammerhead” (although this new color “had more bite”). Designed as a liquid look, superfine metallic silver basecoat with a hint of blue/green color, the paint (officially named Crystalline) worked well over the elegantly flowing body forms of the Avenir. At NAIAS, the Buick Avenir received the 2014 Eyes On Design Award for “Innovative Use of Color, Graphics and Materials” sponsored by AXALTA coatings.
AUTOBLOG QUOTE: “Avenir's sophisticated color palette, including a Crystalline exterior color and strained use of bright work accent Avenir's body lines and sets up the interior for a combination that takes Buick's contemporary style to a higher level”.
